Deputies warn of a scam involving bogus traffic violations

Deputies are warning Kanawha County residents of scammers posing as law enforcement officers in attempts to defraud targets of money for bogus traffic violations. Fraudulent emails are giving notice of traffic violations, prompting residents to make online payments, and the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone that citations are issued in person by officers and fines and handled though the court system. Deputies said exceptions may be toll booth violations issued by the West Virginia Parkways Authority or vehicle registration notices sent by the Division of Motor Vehicles. The two groups send secure payment instructions by mail. Don’t click on anything suspicious.
