Kanawha County Commission releases a report on demolition program

More than 250 dilapidated buildings in Kanawha County have been demolished since 2021. Since revamping its demolition program in 2020, the county has torn down 268 buildings, including 156 so far in 2023, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Commission. Fifteen buildings were torn down in 2021, followed by 97 in 2022. The program, which is complaint driven, results in dilapidated buildings being torn down by the county or the owner, or the structure being rehabilitated in some way. The county said it has used federal funding in recent years to fund the demolitions and plans to apply for more funding to keep the program going into the future.
