A bill in the West Virginia Legislature could prevent jail mugshots from being released to the public

Del. Geoff Foster proposed the bill that would stop the West Virginia Division of Corrections from releasing booking photos to the public. He said he’s concerned about websites that make people pay to remove their mugshots. Last year, Senate Bill 558 became law, banning sheriff’s offices from posting mugshots of misdemeanors or non-violent felony offenders. Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Josh Lester said the new bill could further complicate investigations, and make it more difficult to find missing people. If passed, the bill would only allow mugshots to be released if a person confesses to a crime, is convicted or is an immediate threat to the public.
