Judge orders a review of CPS’ handling of Sissonville case

A federal judge said Child Protective Services failed to “perform an adequate investigation” into children found locked in a Sissonville barn and ordered the agency to provide information on the case in a class-action lawsuit. U.S. Magistrate Judge Cheryl Eifert ordered CPS to provide relevant information on the case within 14 days for a class-action lawsuit regarding the agency’s handling of foster care in West Virginia. The judge said the documents requested would show CPS’ response and activity in the case as well as “establish that caseworkers are understaffed and overworked.” Jeanne Whitefeather and Donald Ray Lantz,, both of Sissonville, were charged with felony gross gross child neglect creating a substantial risk of injury after the children were discovered in October 2023.
