Tornado confirmed in Putnam County with Sunday’s storms

Two tornadoes were confirmed on Sunday from a line of storms that moved across the area. The strongest was in Jackson, County Ohio where a twister touched touched down near Mount Zion Road and tracked along State Route 139 and State Route 32. The storm knocked a tree onto a vehicle at Hope Haven School and reached peak intensity shortly thereafter with winds estimated at 90 mph. The path length was nearly 4 miles. Eyewitness News said the second tornado in Putnam County was brief and rated an EF0 with estimated winds of 75 mph in Winfield near the intersection of Radwin Drive and Hazel Circle. The tornado tracked across the ballfields behind Winfield Elementary. The path length was about one third of a mile. The Putnam tornado marks the 15th tornado in West Virginia this year, which breaks the yearly record of 14 from 1998. The State averages around 2 per year.
