Task force completes a set of guidelines for testing fire hydrants

A special task force assigned to create state rules for testing, inspection and marking of fire hydrants developed a set of guidelines that will be refined by Public Service Commission staffers and presented to the PSC by the end of the month. Eyewitness News said the guidelines include a requirement that fire hydrants be tested yearly and pressure tested every five years. They also provide a color code for low pressure and out-of-service hydrants so firefighters will know what water is available. There are about 50,000 hydrants in the Mountain State with about 10,000 of those hydrants on the West Virginia American Water system.
