Wrongful death suit after a 2023 death leads to a settlement with State Police

A settlement totaling $1 million was approved Tuesday between West Virginia State Police and the estate of a man who died in troopers custody. In February 2023, 45-year old Edmond Exline died after a confrontation with State Police along Interstate 81 near Martinsburg, prompting a wrongful death lawsuit. West Virginia State Police said a caller reported a man walking along the side of the road appeared to be intoxicated. State Police claimed a “struggle” resulted in Exline becoming unresponsive and officers were unable to resuscitate him. Friends and family told Eyewitness News Exline was a paranoid schizophrenic and was likely having a mental health episode. The judge will rule on how the settlement money will be distributed among Exline’s son and four brothers.
