Tram replacement project is in the works

Hawks Nest State Park is getting an upgrade after the park’s aeriel tram replacement project kicked off Friday. The new aeriel trams will hold six people per car, meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards of accessibility and operate on a pulse system. The new tram will replace the original that opened in 1970, which carried passengers down an 800-foot descent to the base of the New River Gorge. The original tram was deemed unsafe in 2021. The tram replacement project is the latest in over $250 million in state park investments over the past seven years, according to the Office of the Governor.
