St Albans man pleades guilty to wire fraud and steal from VFD

A St. Albans man pleaded guilty this week to defrauding the volunteer fire department he worked at and making false insurance claims after setting his own home on fire, according to prosecutors. Donald A. Ennis, 43, pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud in an investigation around a 2021 fire in St. Albans, Ennis admitted to filing false insurance claims to obtain $347,237 after setting fire to his residence in February 2021. Prosecutors said Ennis obtained $153,728 of the fire department’s funds through ATM withdrawals and unauthorized online purchases with a debit card to which he had access. Ennis will be sentenced on Nov. 18 facing up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a maximum of $250,000 in fines and more than $500,000 in restitution.
