Mason County man arrested for having unsecired gun in car while working at a school

A Mason County school custodian was arrested after bringing an unsecured gun to a school, prosecutors said. John H. Kauff, Jr., 39, of Hartford, was detained by police after an 11-year-old student at New Haven Elementary School threatened to shoot himself and another student with a weapon from Kauff’s vehicle on Thursday, according to the Mason County Prosecuting Attorney. Law enforcement obtained a search warrant for Kauff’s vehicle, which was parked at the school due to his employment, where they found a firearm that was not legally secured. Prosecutors said that the office has begun the process of juvenile detention for the student that made the initial threat. Kauff is awaiting arraignment at the Mason County Magistrate Court.
