Republican Debra Rusnak, who holds the interim title now of Kanawha County prosecuting attorney, will face Democrat John R. Mitchell Jr. Mitchell started as an assistant prosecutor in both Nicholas and Kanawha counties but spent most of his 40-year career as a defense attorney in private practice. He was the chairman of the West Virginia State Bar Criminal Law Committee and also served as a state senator. Rusnak was an assistant prosecutor for about a decade. Shortly after she won the primary earlier this year, Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney Chuck Miller retired, and the county commission appointed Rusnak to fill in his role. Voters will decide the race on November 5.
