State lawmakers pass 2 percent tax cut

A bill allowing for a 2% cut in West Virginia’s personal income tax was passed by the legislature Tuesday. The House of Delegates passed Senate Bill 2033 on Tuesday after introducing their own version of a tax cut the day before. Lawmakers ditched that bill and sided with the Senate’s version with a 94-1 vote. The legislation now heads to the governor’s desk. The passage comes after the governor had initially called for a 5% cut at the beginning of the special session. That number was reeled back to 2% on Monday. Eyewitness News said lawmakers have been backing off income tax in recent years, first with a cut of more than 20% followed by an additional 4% triggered by economic conditions.
