Voter-approved levy will pay for metal detectors at Kanawha County high schools

Every Kanawha County high school will be receive a metal detector in the coming months. Kanawha County voters approved a levy in 2022, and last week, the board of education approved a purchase order for nine metal detectors. The announcement comes as the state saw the creation of a task force following hundreds of threats against schools. Eyewitness News said the nine units and a five-year service subscription will cost more than $825,000. They’ll be installed in four to six weeks. This was the second project approved that used part of the $2.7 million security budget from the levy. Earlier in the year, the county hired 12 new security officers, most retired law enforcement.
