The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced Thursday that Army Cpl. Howard Godwin Jr., 22, of Grafton, West Virginia, killed during the Korean War, has been accounted for. Godwin, a member of A Company, 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, was reported missing in action on July 20, 1950, while fighting North Korean forces near Taejon, South Korea. His remains were recovered in January 1951 and buried as Unknown X-351 Tanggok at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, also known as the Punchbowl, in Honolulu.Scientists from the DPAA used dental and anthropological analysis, as well as DNA testing, to identify Godwin’s remains. Godwin will be buried in Grafton on Nov. 15.
