New safety measures to be added in I-64 construction zone

State officials said they are taking a closer look at what can be done to make the interstate work zone in Cabell County safer following several crashes last week.
Additional lighting has already been installed at a crash attenuator on Interstate 64, Those are are designed to slow down vehicles and absorb some of the impact of a crash, according to a news release from the West Virginia Division of Highways.
Additional signage or safety devices may be coming.

The review comes after two tractor-trailer crashes on I-64 last week closed the roadway in both directions. The overall scope of the project underway is to widen I-64 through Cabell County from mile marker 15 to mile marker 20. For the 29th Street to Guyandotte River project, both bridges are currently being worked on. The 29th street bridge is in its final phase and should be completed in early 2025. The Guyandotte River Bridge is in the second phase and should be completed in the fall of 2026.
