A man accused of driving under the influence during a crash that killed a 16-year-old boy in Cabell County was sentenced to prison Monday. Samuel McCoy, who previously pleaded guilty to DUI causing death and fleeing causing death in a 2023 crash, was sentenced to up to 30 years in prison. In October 2023, deputies said McCoy refused a traffic stop, ran a red light and struck a vehicle. Four people were trapped, and a 16-year-old passenger, Jacob Spurlock, died from injuries.
Investigators said a search of McCoy’s vehicle revealed “several types of controlled substances and drug paraphernalia.”
