State officials confirmed a case of bird flu Friday in Pocahontas County. A case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was found in a backyard flock, marking the second domestic case of HPAI since a global outbreak in early 2022, according to a news release from the West Virginia Division of Agriculture. HPIA is an airborne respiratory virus that can quickly spread through domestic flocks, in addition to wildlife. The news release said a field investigation was followed by a sample collection and lab testing, resulting in the affected area being quarantined. Agriculture officials depopulated the flock to prevent the spread of disease and notified industry partners along with state officials.
