West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey said the state is expected to start with an “inherited” $400 million deficit in its budget at beginning of the coming fiscal year. Morrisey made the announcement during a news conference Thursday. The governor said the findings are part of his team’s review as of Monday and reflect Fiscal Year 2026, which runs from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. All the issues of the budget are not going to be handled on day one, it took a while to get to this problem and we’re going to have to do a lot of work to change it,” Morrisey said.
