Health care professionals have confirmed whooping cough outbreaks in West Virginia and Ohio.Four cases have been reported at Hurricane High School and additional instances were discovered in Cabell County and Lawrence County, Ohio, according to the Marshall Health Network.Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a contagious respiratory tract infection that primarily affects unvaccinated individuals and those with compromised immune systems. Marshall Health said local departments are investigating the outbreaks and post-exposure prophylaxis will be utilized to prevent additional cases.
