More potholes are expected as the weather warms up

Drivers may start to notice an increasing amount of potholes with a spring thaw.
Eyewitness News was invited along as crews closed the right lanes of Interstate 64 for pothole repairs and reported some drivers on Piedmont Road in Charleston had to swerve in order to avoid the debris. As water freezes in the winter it expands and causes the pavement to stretch and form into a pothole. Charleston residents can report pothole locations in Charleston to the city’s website. But replacing an entire road is a separate process. Roads are ranked based on current condition, average daily traffic and community impact. Those requests come from community members, engineers, street department staff and must be approved by city council.
