The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals has released an educational video reviewing child abuse and neglect cases. The production highlights a need to protect youth and provides parents with information on how to reunite families, according to a news release from the court. The news release said more than 5,000 child abuse and neglect cases filtered though circuit courts in 2023, making up about 13% of all filings. The West Virginia Supreme Court saw 251 such cases that year, which translated to more than 40% of court proceedings. The video, made using federal grant funds, provides a step-by-step outline of what happens when parents are charged with child abuse and neglect, noting parents may regain custody of children if they can prove they are no longer a risk and successfully meet standards set by the judicial system.
