Public schools losing funding because of losing students

Public schools are funded through local, state and federal dollars based on a variety of factors, but when it comes to how much state funding they are allocated, state officials use the school aid formula. On Friday, lawmakers got a breakdown of the school aid formula, which is determined by several components, but is very heavily dependent on student enrollment. West Virginia’s enrollment has dropped about 30,000 students over the past seven years which means school systems are losing funding. While the ultimate goal is to get people to live in West Virginia, tweaking the school aid formula could be an immediate help for counties dealing with funding loss.
