Charleston Area Medica Center announced a phishing attack may have leaked access to patients’ personal information. According to a data breach notice from CAMC, “a small number of email users were the subject of a phishing attack” in October 2024 that may have resulted in names, birthdays, contact information, social security numbers and health records being compromised. An investigation revealed a single email user’s mailbox was accessed and “no other CAMC systems or data storage were impacted.” Eyewitness News said the medical center will be contacting affected patients via email and have posted a copy of the notice online. Technical security measures and additional employee training will be utilized to help prevent future attacks.
