A former Raleigh County school district employee is accused of embezzling more than $100,000. Derek Brooks has been charged with embezzlement and fraudulent scheme, according to Beckley Police. The investigation began in February after the Raleigh County Board of Education said one of its employees was taking things like iPads and MacBooks from the school district and selling them on eBay. Brooks was the school system’s network administrator at the time. Court documents say Brooks profited more than $122,000 between 2018 and 2025. The total monetary loss to the school system was more than $280,000.
