Shawnee Sports Center project is on hold over budget issues

A multimillion-dollar sports complex planned for part of the Charleston Town Center is on pause due to inflation and budget costs. Kanawha County Commissioner Lance Wheeler told Eyewitness News that inflation’s effect on construction prices and the county’s budget have played a role in a pause on construction of the Capital Sports Center. Wheeler cited a $1 million increase in the jail bill, $500,000 increase in PEIA costs and a larger budget than expected for a renovation project at the Kanawha County Judicial Building. The commissioner said there is no timetable for the project for now while they look for outside funding. Wheeler said they may have to scale things back too. They had hope to have the project finished by 2027, but now that’s up in the air.
