Moves to narrow eligibility for Medicaid now moving through Congress could leave tens of thousands of West Virginians without medical coverage. Supporters of the cuts contend they’re needed to keep Medicaid from going broke later, but opponents point to concerns that rural hospitals providing medical care will go without compensation. Roane General Hospital CEO Doug Bentz said about 25% of the facility’s patients are on Medicaid. “Medicaid is a big part of our business. One out of every four patients that walk through the door is on Medicaid,” Bentz said. “The potential cuts that we’re hearing could impact over 40,000 – upward of 60-to-80,000 West Virginians – could potentially lose their coverage. So, yes it’s a big concern.”
