Wyoming County mine prepares for possible layoffs

Layoffs are possible in the next sixty days for 200 miners and coal preparation plant workers in Wyoming County. The workers have been warned by Core Natural Resources that layoffs and shutdowns could hit Aug. 1. Wyoming County officials who depend heavily on coal severance tax to fund the county told Eyewitness News they’ve not received their required warn notice if the company might idle the mine. The company blamed weaker than expected market conditions and economic forces impacting the market. Core reported a net loss of nearly $70 million in its first quarter, but keeps a positive outlook for the future. Core Natural Resources was formed last year in a merger between Arch Resources and CONSOL Energy.
