Man attacks hospital staff and others and was fatally shot by officer

A man acting erratically and armed with a knife was fatally shot by a Charleston officer when according to the police chief, he began attacking someone early Friday morning at CAMC General.. The incident began just after midnight when the man, later identified as Peter Delnardo Lilly, 46, of Charleston, walked into the hospital’s emergency room seeking treatment for an unknown illness or injury, said Charleston Police Chief Scott Dempsey. At some point, Lilly became aggressive, allegedly threatening those in the area before locking himself in the bathroom. When he exited, Dempsey said he was armed with a knife and began lunging at staff and those in the waiting room. Lilly also attacked a person in an elevator, at which time the officer shot Lilly. The officer involved in the shooting was not identified.
