Food options have changed slightly for 240,000 West Virginia students. Red Jell-O fruit cups have disappeared, along with yogurt topped with colored sprinkles and Cool Ranch Doritos, because they were made with synthetic dyes. Foods that contain colors made from natural sources will be in their place after a law signed by the governor banned seven artificial dyes from school meals. Other states have enacted similar laws that would strip artificial dyes from school meals, but West Virginia’s was the first to take effect, Aug. 1. Petroleum-based synthetic dyes including Red 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2 and Green 3 have been outlawed.
