School districts face a shortage of special needs teachers

As school districts return to the classroom, special education programs are preparing for a year that will be impacted by a shortage in staffing who help develop Individualized Education Programs. Crystal Adkins, a Marion County special education teacher, spoke with Eyewitness News and said the amount of students has doubled and the needs of the students has doubled. Schools across the country are resorting to hiring underqualified teachers to fill the need. Adkins said many schools are struggling to get teachers involved in special education due to the paperwork and discipline issues. She feels vacancies in the field may continue to be an issue until lawmakers step in to make the job pay more.
