Marshall University gets record-setting donation from its president and first lady

Marshall University’s president and first lady are donating $50 million toward a program aimed at eliminating or significantly reducing student debt. The historic donation from Brad D. Smith and Alys Smith will go toward the university’s Marshall For All program, which was launched in 2023 to allow students to combine scholarships, grants and other funding to graduate with little to no debt, according to a news release from Marshall University. The milestone gift is the largest bestowed to the university, and is the largest personal contribution made by a sitting university president to their own institution.
