A South Carolina truck driver has pleaded guilty in connection to a 2022 crash on the West Virginia Turnpike that spilled toxic chemicals into Paint Creek.
Dennis West admitted to negligently discharging pollutants after his tanker overturned, releasing 3,000 gallons of corrosive cleaner into the water. Eyewitness News reported tests showed he was driving under the influence at the time.
The spill killed wildlife and polluted drinking water for nearby residents. West now faces up to a year in federal prison, hefty fines, and possible restitution of over $1.6 million.
His sentencing is set for January 2026.
