Charleston City budget is up for approval next week

Charleston leaders have unveiled a proposed $113.6 million budget for fiscal year 2027, highlighting what officials say is the city’s strongest financial position in decades.

Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin and Finance Director Andy Wood presented the plan during a recent Finance Committee meeting, saying it maintains essential services, invests in infrastructure, and supports city employees—without raising taxes or fees. The proposal heads to City Council for consideration on March 16.

City leaders say Charleston has improved its overall financial position by about $54 million and built strong reserves, including more than $18 million in its Rainy Day Fund.

The budget also includes a pay raise for all city employees and completes the city’s plan to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, while continuing recruitment and retention incentives for police and firefighters.

It also sets aside millions for road paving, equipment upgrades, and neighborhood revitalization projects.
