Mother awaits trial for leaving her kids home alone while she went to a bar

A South Charleston woman is facing charges after police say she left her young children home alone to go to a bar.

Kaitlyn Hanshaw pleaded not guilty Tuesday to child neglect creating risk of injury. The case stems from an October incident in Kanawha County.

According to a criminal complaint, the children’s father contacted police for a welfare check after Hanshaw allegedly told him the kids — both under 7 — were home alone.

Investigators say a location-sharing app showed Hanshaw at a Charleston sports bar about 10 minutes away. Officers found both children asleep inside the home.

Her trial is scheduled for April 20 at 9 a.m.
