State Dept. of Health offers recommendations for treating water in Wyoming County

Health officials are updating recommendations for water systems following an oil spill reported earlier this year in Wyoming County. The West Virginia Department of Health is urging public water systems along the Guyandotte River, downstream of the RD Bailey Dam, to add activated carbon to their treatment processes. Recent testing detected trace amounts of mineral oil past the dam after a transformer leak at a Clear Fork Appalachian Power station in late January. The oil is highly refined and free of PCBs, and no health concerns or changes to water usage have been advised. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection continue to assist with cleanup efforts in the Guyandotte River watershed.
