People of all ages came together Saturday to work on a mural of Martin Luther King Jr.in Charleston. A public painting workshop at the Martin Luther King Community Center had participants painting sections of a mural that will be used to create a larger portrait. The mural’s background will also be designed by people in the community, creating a series of overlapping self-portraits. Organizers hope to have the mural completed by Aug. 28 – the 57th anniversary of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Similar public workshops are scheduled for later this year.
