Demolition Begins on East End Building

Demolition started Tuesday on a building on Charleston’s East End where a facade began crumbling last week. City leaders closed streets near the building, located at 1599 Washington St. E., after bricks began falling off of the building and it was deemed a threat to public safety. The building had extensive decay, including deterioration of the veneer brick and parapets, corrosion on steel lintels, falling roof coverings, advanced decay in the second story floor system, fungal growth throughout the building, active water seepage and other structural issues. City leaders said they will file liens against the property to recoup all demolition-related expenses.
