State revenue up in April

State revenue for April was just above estimates, even though the tax filing deadline was pushed back a month. Collections were almost 540-million-dollars, which is almost two-million-dollars higher than estimates.

Landmark opioid distribution trial underway

A landmark trial against the “big three” pharmaceutical distributors is underway at the Byrd Federal Courthouse in Charleston. The City of Hunting and Cabell County Commission are suing the drug wholesalers for fueling the opioid crisis in West Virginia, and shipping nearly one-hundred-million pills to Cabell County over ten years.

Tornado touches down in Ranson

One person was injured when a tornado touched down in Ranson. A roof collapsed at Universal Forest Products, and several homes were damaged in a nearby subdivision. At least two structures in Berkeley County also collapsed.

Drennen found guilty on eight counts

A Kanawha County jury returned a guilty verdict in the Joshua Drennen trial. He was convicted on all eight counts including the murder of a 77-year-old woman and attacking a Charleston police officer.

Mayor Goodwin wants more non-lethal force training

Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin is calling for mandatory training and certification for all police officers. She wants officers trained in de-escalation tactics and use of non-lethal force, and wants an inventory of all tasers, and a recommendation buy more. This comes after an officer-involved shooting last week.
