News Staff Three West Virginia cities will host remote workers as part of a new program to attract workers to West Virginia by promoting the state’s scenery and outdoor lifestyle. The program offers financial incentives, free and subsidized trips, and networking events.
Veteran Kanawha County Prosecutor Maryclaire Akers was sworn in as judge of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit. She was appointed by Governor Justice to fill the seat of her mentor, the late Judge Charles King, Jr., who passed away in December.
The West Virginia House Finance Committee passed it’s own version of a bill to reduce the state personal income tax. The governor’s plan includes several tax hikes, and the new plan doesn’t have any tax increases, but would require the legislature to make 150-million-dollars in cuts every year until the state income tax is gone.
The state Senate Judiciary Committee passed four gun measures in about an hour to protect the rights of gun owners. One resolution asks the President and Congress to not infringe on the 2nd Amendment. The votes come amidst calls for tighter gun control after mass shootings in Colorado and Georgia.
Two people are recovering from smoke inhalation after a Huntington fire. The fire started in the kitchen at a home on West 27th Street. Fire Chief Jan Rader says there’s been an increase in cooking fires, since more people are staying home.
A Logan County man is under arrest for taking drugs while babysitting a five-month-old and a five-year-old. Officers found pills and needles near a crib, and the five-year-old was unsupervised. He’s charged with child neglect. Child Protective Services took custody of the children.
Governor Justice signed a bill that protects employers, health care providers, and others from COVID-19 lawsuits, even if public health guidelines were ignored. Several lawsuits already filed target measures Justice put in place through executive orders.
Expanding eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine to anyone sixteen and older is proving to challenging. Health departments say the supply is not yet meeting demand. Expanding eligibility to teenagers is complicated because only the Pfizer vaccine is approved for them.
