News Staff The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources is reporting over three-hundred-eighty new cases of COVID-19, and five more people have died. More than four-hundred-thousand people have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and over two-hundred-fifty-thousand are fully vaccinated.
The Governor says twenty more COVID-19 deaths went unreported, in addition to the one-hundred-sixty-five that were announced last week. Justice has ordered a full investigation and says there could be disciplinary action. Hospital officials blame the miscounts on paperwork errors.
Governor Justice is working on a plan to get more seniors vaccinated quickly. Three fixed-site clinics are being setup and more workers will man the phone banks in an effort to get those sixty-five and older vaccinated as soon as possible. Justice says his goal is to have eighty-five-percent of West Virginia’s elderly vaccinated.
The West Virginia House of Delegates passed a bill that would protect historical monuments, including Confederate memorials. The bill would make it illegal to remove or relocate the monuments from public locations, and bans cities and counties from renaming streets, building, parks or other public places with historical names. Schools are exempt from the list.
A Morgantown man and another man have been indicted by a grand jury for using bear spray and injuring several officers during the January 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol. George Tanios is accused of assaulting Officer Brian Sicknick, who investigators believe may have ingested a chemical substance that may have contributed to his death.
Beckley police are releasing the names of the mother and son who were attacked by her boyfriend. Twenty-four-year-old Felicia Brown is in stable condition after she was stabbed. Her seven-year-old son Tre’shaun Brown died after he was hit with a hammer. Thirty-four-year-old Rashad Thompson is charged with murder and attempted murder.
A man is under arrest for stealing an ambulance and leading police on a chase that injured three police officers. Kanawha County deputies are assisting the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association in an investigation into the deaths of seven puppies. The dogs were found in a plastic tote beside Eden’s Fork Road. Contact the sheriff’s office if you have any information.
Governor issued a proclamation ordering flags at all state owned facilities to be flown at half-staff in honor of the shooting victims in Atlanta earlier this week. The governor’s order is in accordance with President Joe Biden’s proclamation. Eight people, mostly of Asian descent, were shot and killed at three Atlanta area spas.
