Flood Watch is in Effect

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch through Friday morning for counties including Kanawha, Mingo, Logan, Boone, Clay, McDowell, Wyoming, Raleigh, Fayette and Nicholas. Moderate to heavy rain could cause localized flooding when combined with wet ground from previous rain. Minor flooding is possible for low lying area, creeks and streams.

“Tim Tebow Bill” passes in Senate Education Committee

The Senate Education Committee passed a bill that would allow kids who are home schooled to play sports at public schools. The “Tim Tebow Bill,” would allow students to play high school sports if they meet ACT requirements, get a physical exam, and have their immunizations up to date.

Religious Liberties Act goes to full House

The West Virginia Student Religious Liberties Act passed through the House Education Committee, and will head to the full House for consideration. The bill would protect a student’s right to express religious freedom.

Dunbar considers medical marijuana dispensaries

The City of Dunbar is considering a proposal to allow medical marijuana dispensaries. The city has been approached by three companies interested in coming to Dunbar. The city could collect as much as 100-thousand-dollars in tax revenue.

The West Virginia Secretary of State’s office says the state’s voting app is secure. West Virginia allows overseas military personnel to vote with a cell phone app, and it’s being expanded to people with disabilities. Charleston Police Chief Opie Smith is expected to announce his retirement. Mayor Amy Goodwin has scheduled a news conference for later today. Smith has been an officer for over twenty-years, and has served as chief for just over a year.

Homeless man pleads guilty to smashing glasses and plates

Jeffery Havis pleaded guilty to attempted unlawful wounding for smashing glasses and plates on a table outside the Tidewater Grill last summer. Havis is homeless, and became violent when two women sitting on the patio wouldn’t give him money. He faces up to three years in prison.

Man accused of firing at officers

A Barbour County man is accused of firing shots at officers and barricading himself inside a Philippi home. Forty-year-old Brianna Watson is charged with attempted murder of a police officer.
