West Virginia Soldiers Head to the Middle East

Seven soldiers with the West Virginia Army National Guard left Charleston over the weekend for the Middle East. The soldiers left from Yeager Airport Saturday morning to join soldiers from North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, and West Viginia on deployment in the Middle East.

Christmas tree collection Saturday

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s REAP program is collecting old Christmas trees at two locations Saturday. The collection points are at the Capitol Market in Charleston and at the Recreational Complex in Bridgeport from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The trees will be used for fish habitat.

Four new Charleston police officers sworn in

Charleston police added four new members to the ranks. The new recruits took an oath from Mayor Goodwin and Police Chief Opie Smith. The four recruits bring the total number of Charleston police officers to over one-hundred-sixty.

Huntington Mayor wants to make it harder to open new bars

The Hookah bar where seven people were shot New Year’s Eve is shut down, and Huntington Mayor Steve Williams want to make it harder for new bars to open in the city. The mayor wants to make changes to the business license process that would include a more thorough vetting process.

Public comment period open on vape ban

The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department is considering ways to regulate vaping. A 30-day public comment period started in December on a proposal to eliminate electronic smoking devices in public places. Goodwin will give “State of the City” address

Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin will give her “State of the City” address next week. The speech will highlight progress made last year, and discuss the vision and priorities for 2020. Goodwin will address the Charleston City Council meeting Monday night at Charleston City Hall.

Foreign investment legislation could re-energize China deal

Security increased at Yeager Airport

Officials at Yeager Airport are adding extra security measures after a U.S. airstrike killed Iran’s top general. Police will be stepping up patrols around the area. There is no known threat. The patrols are being added out of an abudance of caution.
