City Council advances bill to prevent officials from accepting grants

A Charleston City Council committee is advancing a bill that prevents city elected officials, Mayor’s Office employees, department heads, their family members and the businesses, from accepting city grant money without first getting an advisory opinion from the West Virginia Ethics Commission. It now goes to the full council for a vote.

Escaped wallaby returned to owner

A wallaby, seen hopping around a St. Albans neighborhood, has made its way home. His owner says he got out by escaping through a broken basement door. A neighbor was able to capture the animal and return him.

Police are looking for pickpocket

Police are looking for a man and a woman who stole a wallet at the Cross Lanes Cracker Barrel. A woman felt an arm brush up against her, and later realized her wallet was missing. The victim’s credit card was later used at Best Buy and Lowes.

Body found along Hocking River identified

Authorities have identified a body found by kayakers along the Hocking River near Nelsonville. Thirty-nine-year-old Derek Johnson was found close to the Hocking and Athens County Line. He was reported missing in January. The Medical Examiner’s Office is still investigating his cause of death.

Woman wanted for stealing trucks

Police are still looking for a woman who broke into Diversified Oil and Gas on Koala Lane in Elkview and stole two trucks. Investigators have identified a man who was involved in the incident, but he hasn’t been charged.

3-year-old killed in accidental shooting

A three-year-old boy is dead following a shooting in Meigs County. The boy got a hold of a gun and accidentally shot himself in the chest. The sheriff says it’s too early in the investigation to know if any charges will be filed.

Deadly officer-involved shooting in Doddridge County

A man is dead and his wife was hurt in an officer-involved shooting in Doddridge County. Seventy-four-year-old Gary McMilian had a history of confronting neighbors with a gun.
