2021 Bridge Day canceled

The 2021 Bridge Day is canceled. The Bridge Day Commission voted unanimously, citing several concerns with COVID-19. Two BASE jumper groups pulled out of the event.

State lawmakers reviewing congressional district maps

State lawmakers are mulling over several different map options for the new congressional district split. The six different maps are being reviewed for size, population balance and future growth trends. Each of the districts will be made up of roughly 900-thousand residents.

Church fire ruled arson

The West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s office says a church fire earlier this week was arson. Two church fires were reported with a mile of each in Clay County. Investigators determined the second fire at Flat Fork Baptist Church was “incendiary in cause.” The first fire at People’s Community Church is still under investigation.

Putnam County changes gun shop rules

Putnam County Commissioners are making changes to gun sale laws. Gun shops no long have to maintain a three-hundred-foot minimum from homes, churches, or schools. Revenue up in Sept.

West Virginia is reporting a nearly 85-million-dollar revenue surplus for September. Collections were over five-hundred-million-dollars, that’s almost 20-percent higher than last year. The end of September was the end of the first quarter for fiscal year 2022.

Uptick in COVID-19 numbers

There is an uptick in COVID-19 numbers with more than fourteen-thousand active cases statewide, and over fifty people have died. Hospitalizations are down slightly, to just under one-thousand. Governor Justice is encouraging more people to get vaccinated. Just over 55-percent of eligible West Virginians are fully vaccinated.

Five finalist for Marshall University president

The five finalists for the position of President of Marshall University are ready to start in-person interviews. The presidential search committee cut the list down to five, from over one-hundred applicants. The interview process will take place the week of October 11th.

Gardner will receive $3 million settlement in wrongful conviction

Former Charleston Wheelers player, Jimmie Gardner, will receive three-million dollars in a settlement with the state and Kanawha County. Gardner’s conviction was overturned after spending more the twenty-five-years in prison for sexual assault. The judge ruled that he was convicted on false testimony from a disgraced West Virginia State Police medical examiner.
