SBA spending $3 million on new projects

The state School Building Authority approved three-million-dollars for projects at six career technical centers. The legislature is allowing the SBA to spend up to ten-percent of it overall funds on multi-county projects. That raised this year’s allocation from about $1 million to $3 million.

Wheeler resigns from Huntington City Council

Huntington City Council Chairwoman Jennifer Wheeler is resigning. Wheeler is stepping down immediately because she is moving to a home outside her District 4 boundary. The City Council has 30 days to select Wheeler’s replacement.

Temporary restraining order for needle exchange bill

A judge is issuing a temporary restraining order for West Virginia’s new Needle Exchange Bill. The law establishes a licensing requirement for syringe exchange programs, and was set to go into effect in July. The ACLU filed a lawsuit saying the bill could make the HIV outbreak in West Virginia worse.

Two firefighters hurt in house fire

Two firefighters were hurt when flames ripped through a Hurricane home. They were treated for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion, and are expected to be okay. The homeowner made it out safely. The house is a total loss, and a neighboring home was also damaged.

Kanawha County Commissioner frustrated with Appalachian Power

Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper is expressing his frustration with Appalachian Power. He says more than two-thousand customers in the Elk Valley area lost power over the weekend in 90-degree heat, and were not told how long the outage would last. Carper calls a proposed rate increase by the power company, ridiculous.
