Vote canvassing begins today in West Virginia. All fifty-five counties will be looking over provisional ballots. President Trump won the state by a large margin. There are not enough provisional ballots to change the outcome.
Two people are recovering at St. Mary’s Hospital after a shooting accident on Mud River Road in Barboursville. A man and a young boy were injured when a .50 caliber rifle malfunctioned and exploded. The Cabell County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
Fire destroyed a southern Jackson County home. The home on Kentuck Road was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. Everyone made it out safely. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Charleston Police Hybrid Unit is boarding up abandoned homes where there is evidence of squatters. The Hybrid United boarded up two houses on the West side, two on the East end, and one on the South side. The police department offers people experiencing homelessness help with an outreach coordinator.
Police in Charleston said they recovered about $4,000 in shoplifted merchandise and arrested 23 people during a weeklong operation. The Charleston Police Department said the Lowe’s in Kanawha City has lost thousands of dollars in merchandise from shoplifting. The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission has adjusted its stance slightly on the high school football playoffs. Teams from orange and red counties will now be included in the initial playoff fields. A Charleston tire shop was destroyed by fire Saturday morning. Metro 911 dispatchers said the fire was reported at Mountaineer Tire on Kanawha Blvd. around 4:30 a.m. Saturday. By the time firefighters got there the fire had spread from a pile of tires outside the building to the structure itself.
The West Virginia Department of Education released its weekly school re-entry map Saturday night after a delay. Football and volleyball teams were eager to get the information to learn if they could play in the postseason. Counties in orange include Lincoln, Putnam, and Jackson. Mingo county is in red.
