Kanawha County is moving into the yellow on the state’s color-coded map. The change follows a four-day testing blitz last week. There are no counties in the red, but four counties remain in the orange.
Kanawha County Circuit Judge Joanna Tabit ruled against a high school quarterback’s challenge to the state’s COVID-19 alert map. She says there is no constitutional right to extracurricular activities.
House Speaker Roger Hanshaw is calling for Governor Justice to name Repbulican Mark Bate to fill the seat vacated by John Mandt. Mandt resigned after anti-Muslim and anti-gay comments were connected to his social media. Bate and Mandt are on the ballot next month.
Quenton Sheffield will spend life in prison for murder. Sheffield was sentenced to life without parole for the 2017 shooting that killed a man in Huntington. He was also found guilty of malicious wounding, and other charges. He’ll be sentenced at a later date on those charges.
Kanawha County Schools are preparing for a five-day week of in-person learning starting Monday. All kids are required to wear masks, classroom capacity will be limited, and class periods will be staggered, so the hallways aren’t full.
Ruffner Elementary School in Charleston has a confirmed case of COVID-19. It’s the latest case on the Kanawha County School systems coronavirus tracking page. There are a total of eight cases of the virus at seven different schools.
