Walmart’s drive-in movie series will stop in WV

Walmart will host a free, nationwide, drive-in movie series that will include four stops in the Mountain State. The tour includes stops in Beckley, Hurricane, Huntington, and Morgantown, and will feature movies like, “The Wizard of Oz,” “Space Jam,” “Black Panther” and more. The movies are free, but you’ll have to request a ticket online.

100 new cases of COVID-19 in WV

There are over one-hundred new cases of COVID-19 in West Virginia, but the number of active cases dropped by almost fifty. There are over 18-hundred active cases and the positive test rate is over two-and-a-half percent. One-hundred-fifteen people are hospitalized with the virus, and just under half of those are in ICU.

Back-to-School plan inclues statewide broadband access

A keystone to the governor’s virtual learning plan is the “Kids Connect Initiative” which will create one-thousand wireless access points across the state for students from kindergarten to college. The six-million-dollar project will create a broadband network in all K-12 schools, over thirty higher-ed schools, 255 libraries, and more than thirty state parks.

Trump signs Great American Outdoors Act

President Trump signed the Great American Outdoors Act. The bill, championed by Senator Joe Manchin, will guarantee funding for the Land-Water conservation Fund. The bill will also fund improvements and repairs for the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service recreation areas.

Census deadline moved up a month

The West Virginia Complete Count Commission is moving up the 2020 U.S. Census self-response deadline by a month. The new date is September 30th. The response rate is still below 50-percent in around half of West Virginia counties.

Schools of Deaf and the Blind need superintendent

Scott Cochran will not become the new superintendent for the West Virginia Schools of the Deaf and the Blind. He accepted the position last week, but has reconsidered and backed out of the position. Cochran has been the superintendent in Webster County for six years, and will remain in that position.
