The Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program ends tomorrow, but WorkForce West Virginia says state assistance is available. DHHR also has benefits created specifically to respond to the pandemic. Officials say that “in the absence of federal assistance, the Justice administration will do what it can to help people experiencing hard times.”
The Mountain State Forest Festival in Elkins is being cancled for this year. Organizers say it will return next Ocotober.
Sheetz Convenience stores, which has nearly sixty West Virginia locations, says the “coin shortage” is real. Since some businesses are still shut down there’s a circulation issue, and the U.S. Mint has slowed production because of social distancing requirements. A Wayne man was killed in a house fire. Sixty-two-year-old Larry Rice died in the blaze on Jericho Road. It was caused by smoking while oxygen was in use.
An infant is in critical condition after a shooting in Ohio Township. It happened at a home on Double Creek Road. The baby is in critical condition. One person is in custody.
Parts of Clendenin and Quarrier Street will be closed this morning for the funeral procession of firefighter Jason Cuffe. There will be rolling closures, as well, starting around noon. Cuffe died from a medical emergency earlier this week.
After a big push from the Kanawha County Commissioners, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice announced this week all volunteer fire departments in the state will receive financial assistance.
