Thomas Health emerging from bankruptcy

Thomas Health has signed an agreement with a new financial partner and hopes to emerge from bankruptcy by September. Thomas, which operates Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston, and Charleston’s St. Francis Hospital, announced the deal worth 145-million-dollars with New York based Hamlin Capital Management.

Sponaugle considering recount in Attorney General race

Delegate Isaac Sponaugle is taking the weekend to decide if he’ll seek a recount in the Democratic race for state Attorney General. Sponaugle finished just 145 votes behind Sam Petsonk, who is declaring victory. He has until 10 p.m. on Tuesday to decide if he wants a recount.

Inmate dies at federal prison in WV

An inmate has died at a federal prison in West Virginia. Thirty-three-year-old Jensy Mendoza was found unresponsive at the Secure Female Facility Hazleton. The cause of death is under investigation. There is no indication it was COVID-19 related. Mendoza was serving a three sentence on drug charges. She had been at Hazelton since February.

WV National Guard convoy crashes on I-79

A crash involving a West Virginia National Guard convoy is under investigation in Harrison County. An armored military carrier ran off I-79 near the Stonewood exit and hit a tree. A passenger vehicle was also involved. Two guard members suffered minor injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was also hurt.

Fire destroys 3 buildings in Grafton

Fire destroyed three buildings and damaged three others in downtown Grafton. The fire started in a vacant commercial building on West Main Street and spread quickly to two adjacent buildings. Firefighters battled the blaze for almost eight hours. The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

Homes damaged in Alderson flash flood

As many as two dozen homes were damaged in flash flooding in Alderson. Heavy afternoon rains flooded Griffith Creek. A few local roads were washed out and water filled several basements. No one was hurt.

Yeager Airport projects 80% drop in passengers

Yeager Airport officials are estimating an eighty-percent drop in passengers when their new fiscal year begins July 1st. The estimates are part of a new budget that includes ten-million-dollars for operating expenses, and eighteen-million-dollars for capital improvements.
